Our History

The Mahopac Teachers’ Association (MTA) represents more than 400 dedicated professionals who serve the students and families of the Mahopac Central School District. Our membership includes teachers, librarians, nurses, counselors, and other professional service providers working throughout Mahopac's schools.

The roots of the Mahopac Teachers’ Association stretch back to an important period in the history of public education and organized labor in New York State.

In 1967, New York enacted the Public Employees’ Fair Employment Act, commonly known as the Taylor Law. The law fundamentally changed labor relations for public employees by establishing the right of public employees to organize and be represented in collective bargaining with their employers.

It was during this era that the Mahopac Teachers’ Association emerged as the collective voice of Mahopac's educators. By the early 1970s, the MTA was already representing Mahopac teachers through a negotiated collective bargaining agreement and advocating for members through contractual grievance and arbitration procedures.

Over the decades that followed, generations of MTA members and leaders worked together to negotiate and defend the wages, benefits, working conditions, and professional protections that members have today.

Those protections did not simply appear.

They were negotiated.

Salary schedules, health benefits, leave provisions, preparation time, workload protections, grievance procedures, retirement provisions, professional rights, and countless other contractual protections are the result of decades of collective bargaining and advocacy by the educators who came before us.

The MTA's work has also extended beyond the bargaining table. Our Association has a long tradition of supporting the Mahopac community, contributing to local organizations and charities, providing scholarships to students, participating in community events, and advocating for strong public schools.

While the issues facing educators have changed over the years, the fundamental purpose of the Mahopac Teachers’ Association has remained the same:  to protect our members, strengthen our profession, advocate for our students, and support one another.

Every generation of MTA members inherits something built by the members who came before them—and has a responsibility to protect and strengthen it for those who will follow.

Our history reminds us that there is strength in standing together.
